Disclaimer

SepticPlain is general information. Septic rules vary by state and county, and your local health department decides. Not professional or legal advice.

Effective 3 November 2026.

General information only

Everything on SepticPlain (septicplain.com) is general information, published to help readers understand septic systems: what they cost, how they are sized, how they are cared for and what can go wrong. It is not professional, engineering, legal, financial, tax or insurance advice, and it does not take your own property, soil, system or circumstances into account. For decisions that matter, please speak to a qualified professional.

Rules vary by state and county

Septic systems are regulated by states, tribes and local governments, not the federal government. Tank sizes, setbacks, permits, inspections, pumping requirements and rules at the sale of a home differ from state to state, and counties and health districts can add their own. A rule we describe for one state may not apply where you live, and rules change.

Your local health department or permitting office decides what your system needs, whether a design or repair is approved, and what a permit or inspection requires. Check with that office before work starts. Notes on rules at the sale of a home are general information, not legal advice; for a sale, speak to a real estate attorney.

Estimates only

Every cost on this site is an estimate. It is not a quote, a bid, a guarantee or a judgment on whether any price is right. Our figures are built from public data and stated assumptions, as our how we estimate costs page explains. Your real cost depends on your state and county, your soil and site, the system type, how easy the work is to reach, what is found once work starts, and what the permitting office requires. A licensed local professional prices the real job.

We do no pumping or installs

SepticPlain does no pumping, installs, inspections, design or repairs. We have not seen your system, your property or your quote. Prices, wages, published estimates and product details we cite come from others, and we cannot verify them ourselves.

Safety

Septic tanks can hold gases that kill. Hydrogen sulfide can build up in enclosed spaces, and at high levels you can no longer smell it. Never enter a septic tank or lean into an open one. If someone collapses in or near an open tank, call 911 and do not go in after them. Keep lids secured and never leave an open lid unattended, as Washington’s Department of Health advises.

Nothing on this site is an instruction to pump, dig up, repair or replace any part of a septic system yourself. If sewage is backing up into your home or surfacing in the yard, contact your local health department. If you think a failing system may be affecting a drinking water well, ask your local health department about testing the water, as EPA advises. In any emergency, call 911.

Accuracy

Pages are checked against the sources they cite, but no check catches everything. Prices, wages, fees, grants and rules change, sometimes quickly, so a figure may be out of date by the time you read it. Check important details with the original source before you rely on them.

Grants, tax credits, loans and insurance

Notes on grants, tax credits, loans or insurance are general. They are not tax, financial or insurance advice, and program rules and limits change. Check with the program itself, a tax professional, your lender or your insurer.

Calculators

Calculators give estimates based on what you enter and on the figures, state rules and assumptions they show. They are not quotes, guarantees, or design, sizing, permit, code or safety sign-offs, and they do not say what you are allowed to install. They print numbers only, so read the notes on the page around them.

How our content is made

Every page is fact-checked against its sources before it is published. Pages appear under the SepticPlain name. Our editorial policy explains the process.

Advertising and independence

SepticPlain is funded by display advertising. Advertisers have no say over what we publish, and an ad on a page is not an endorsement. We use no affiliate links, accept no paid placements, sell no leads and make no contractor referrals. Names of companies, products, publishers and agencies are used only to identify them, and we are not affiliated with them.

We link to sources and other websites so you can check what we say. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content.
